Walmart and the Walmart Foundation believe that every family should have access to affordable, nutritious, sustainably-grown food.

For too many families, this is not the case. So, we are working with farmers and suppliers, and collaborating with nonprofit organizations around the world, to help ensure more people have access to the foods they want and need.

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation exceeded their $2 billion cash and in-kind commitment to fight hunger in the U.S. We reached this goal in FY2014 one year ahead of schedule, with $260 million in cash and $2.6 billion dollars, or 1.58 billion pounds of in-kind food donations.

There is still work to do, and in 2015, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation extended our food commitment with a goal of providing four billion meals to those in need, and helping more than four million more people receive nutrition education over the next five years.

In working to build a sustainable food system, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation committed to funding training for one million farmers and farm workers in emerging markets, of which half will be women, by the end of 2016.

In 2015:

  • Walmart donated 1.1 billion meals through our stores and clubs and through philanthropic investments in charitable and federal meal programs.
  • Walmart and the Walmart Foundation contributed nearly $61 million in national, state and local grants to nonprofits across the nation with a focus on charitable organizations working to increase access to meals for low-income families.
  • Walmart associates volunteered over 159,000 hours toward hunger relief causes or organizations, raising more than $1.4 million through Walmart’s Volunteerism Always Pays program.
  • Walmart engaged suppliers, customers and Walmart associates in the Fight Hunger. Spark Change. campaign to raise awareness of the issue of hunger in the U.S., and donated more than $2.5 million to Feeding America and its network of food banks.
